Basic Life Support and AED Training Course

Overview

This course is aimed at people wanting to learn basic life support (BLS). You will learn to recognise if a person is unconscious and how to tell if they are having a cardiac arrest. You will learn how to respond in these situations, how to put somebody in the recovery position, how to perform CPR, and how to use an AED. This course provides the essential treatment algorithm and instructions for performing CPR on an adult. BLS can be life-saving first aid and increases the chances of survival.

Target Audience

All seafarers and shore based staff in companies in which AED devices are used.

Content

  • Module 1 - Basic life saving
  • Module 2 - The vital "chain of survival"
  • Module 3 - The airway, breathing and circulation (ABC) scheme
  • Module 4 - Breathing and non-breathing casualty situations
  • Module 5 - Automated external defibrillator (AED) and how to use one safely

Based on the 2015 AHA Guidelines for CPR and ECC

Mode of Delivery

This course is delivered using Computer Based Training. Students may use this presentation. It includes comprehensive on-screen instructions to get started. The course contains text with (English language) voiceover, still photographs, video clips and animations.

Course Duration

It is estimated that 1-2 Guided Learning Hours (GLHs)are required to complete a Course. GLHs include the time needed to follow the program on the computer, plus time needed for additional reading and research as well as the time needed to complete the assessments.

Assessment

Computer based assessment of randomised multiple choice questions.

Progression

On successful completion of a Course, candidates would be expected to consolidate their knowledge by performing their role on board ship

Mode of delivery

This course is delivered using interactive Computer Based Training (CBT). Students follow easy on-screen instructions to progress through the course. The program contains text with (optional) English language voiceover, still photographs, video clips and animations.

Certification

A candidate who would like to gain a certificate must first enrol with Videotel. The candidate will need to submit all the necessary documentation and meet the minimum criteria in assessment.
