Leadership & Management - How to Communicate Verbally

Videotel’s Leadership & Management course provides essential knowledge and useful theory not only on the skills needed by senior managers at sea, but also includes skills required by junior officers and acts as a stepping stone towards more formal management training. Now individual modules from the course have been made available separately each covering practical, everyday leadership and management skills.

In this module we look at ‘How to Communicate Verbally’. This is an important skill for anyone to get right, but it’s particularly crucial for seafarers these days, since so many ships have multi-national crews who have to communicate in a language which is not their own. We will cover listening, why it is hard and how to get better at it. Questioning, different types of questions and when to use them. Useful verbal techniques, which help to make our conversations more efficient and reduce misunderstandings. We will also cover body language.

Mode of delivery

Study units use a mixture of visuals, graphics, short video sequences, voice-over and text. Learners interact with the graphics. Each unit ends with a test of comprehension.


There is a computer based test assessment at the end of the program.


A candidate who would like to gain a certificate must first enrol with Videotel. The candidate will need to submit all the necessary documentation and meet the minimum criteria in assessment.
