Safe Container Operations Training Course

The worldwide boom in container transportation by sea has benefited many countries. However, it is estimated that up to 10,000 containers a year worldwide are involved in collapsed stow accidents on ships. Such incidents cause serious problems to these vessels, to their crew, the ship operators and cargo owners. Many of the containers are lost overboard, becoming navigation hazards to other vessels, or pollution threats to the environment. The costs of containers lost overboard to the shipping industry are enormous, in cargo compensation payouts, increased shipping insurance, missed sailing schedules, and - more importantly - sometimes at the cost of lives.

Everyone involved in the journey of a container and its cargo can have an influence on the development and safety of that ship's Stowage Plan. The work of shore side staff, especially those directly involved in planning or organising the transportation of containers or drawing up a Stowage Plan for a container ship, can greatly affect whether containers and cargoes reach their destination safely. Their duty of care to containers can also help safeguard crews of container ships and protect the environment.

The aim of this program is to help users understand how to plan and carry out stowage of containers effectively. They will appreciate the importance of following correct procedures when contributing to, preparing and carrying out a safe Stowage Plan. Keeping to correct procedures at all times will help to reduce the number of incidents involving collapsed stows at sea.
