IMDG Code Training Course


This course provides users with the opportunity to become familiar with the rules governing the carriage of dangerous goods by sea, as laid down in the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code.

Who the course is designed for:

  • This course is designed for all those on board ship who are involved with the planning, stowing and handling of dangerous goods
  • All those ashore who are concerned with booking dangerous goods as freight on board ships
  • The course can be used on board ship or ashore

Course pre-requisites


Course objectives

To provide a course compliant with, and meeting the requirements of, the International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code, 2014 Edition. This includes Amendments 37 - 14. The use of this code is mandatory.

Course outcomes

On the successful completion of this training course, the participant will be able to use the IMDG Code to:

  • Explain how a product would be classified for an international maritime voyage
  • Identify the class and packing group of a product given its proper shipping name
  • Identify whether a product is a marine pollutant according to its UN number
  • Identify whether a product is permitted to be carried in limited quantities, and if so, what quantity limits are permitted
  • Find advice for actions to take in the event of emergency situations such as fire, contamination or spillage, where dangerous goods are involved
  • Find advice on the personal protective equipment to wear when dealing with a spillage
  • Identify High Consequences Dangerous Goods and the relevant security risks

Mode of delivery

This course is delivered using interactive Computer Based Training (CBT). Students follow easy on-screen instructions to progress through the course. The program contains text with (optional) English language voiceover, still photographs, video clips and animations.


If the user intends to gain certification for the course, they must enrol, complete the projects set for each module and submit them for external assessment.


On successful completion of the course, Videotel will issue a certificate.*
